Science for the Carpathians (S4C)

Established in 2008, the Science for the Carpathians (S4C) connects scientists in Central Europe, defines research priorities for the region and enhances international collaboration with partners from outside the Carpathians.

Among their many initiatives, they develop and implement the „Research Agenda for the Carpathians,“ promote research coordination and collaborations across disciplines and national boundaries, advocate for a Carpathian research area towards pan-Carpathian research, facilitate the development of peer-reviewed papers and synthesis articles, and foster dialogue between research, policy and practice.

Carpathian Education for Sustainable Development Expert Network (CESDEN)

Meeting the needs of all people within the means of the planet and its ecosystems is a complex issue that the field of sustainable development faces. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) addresses this issue by transforming education and enabling learning for people of all ages to fundamentally shift behaviors and institutions toward sustainable development actions.

The Carpathian Convention created a network of experts in the field of ESD to help strengthen the Convention’s networks, communication and awareness-raising. This expert network aims to support ESD in the region, strengthening environmental and sustainable development awareness and action, cross-thematic linkages, and connections between diverse actors, thus facilitating implementation of the Carpathian Convention and the Carpathian Vision 2050.

Carpathian Network of Protected Areas (CNPA)

At the COP1, the Convention established the Carpathian Network of Protected Areas (CNPA) and constituted a thematic network of mountain protected areas in the Carpathians. The CNPA supports and develops necessary activities for the implementation of the Carpathian Convention and especially its Biodiversity Protocol.

The steering committee for the CNPA is composed of focal points nominated by each Party, and reports to the Carpathian Convention Implementation Committee through the Secretariat of the Convention.

The Carpathian Wetlands Initiative (CWI)

Initiated by the Slovak Republic on World Wetlands Day in February 2004, the Carpathian Wetlands Initiative (CWI) was established in order to contribute to the implementation of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) and UNEP Vienna Programme Office – Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention.

CWI operates as a regional initiative within the framework of both the Ramsar Convention and the Carpathian Convention. CWI aims to facilitate the collaboration between the two Conventions and their Parties in conserving and wisely using wetlands in the Carpathian region.

The CWI Board is composed of the National Focal Points delegated by the Parties to the Carpathian Convention.
