Tusnad EcoBear Conference

22-25 October 2024   Băile Tușnad, Romania

We are thrilled to announce the 3rd edition of the Tusnad EcoBear Conference. This year’s theme addresses a critical issue in wildlife conservation: coexistence with large carnivores, such as brown bears and grey wolves.

As populations of these species grow, communities around the world are facing new challenges—particularly when large carnivores become habituated to human environments. The conference aims to bring together global experts, policymakers, and practitioners to develop practical solutions for managing these interactions, especially in human-dominated landscapes. There will also be a strong emphasis on collaboration between established experts and younger participants, ensuring capacity-building for future challenges, including climate change.

Speaker registration closes on September 20, 2024, and general participant registration ends on October 20, 2024.

Brown bears, grey wolves, and other large carnivores often pose significant challenges, especially when present in large numbers and habituated to human food sources. The coexistence with these species has never been more challenging. While conservation initiatives worldwide are leading to an increase in large carnivore populations, local communities often struggle to adapt due to issues like inadequate awareness, insufficient prevention incentives, and lack of stakeholder cooperation.

The Tusnad EcoBear Conference was initiated in 2022 to address these challenges, specifically within the Romanian context. Their aim is to unite diverse perspectives, competencies, and experiences from global experts on human-large carnivore coexistence.

Key topics will focus on generating practical solutions to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts in human-dominated landscapes and enhance our understanding of brown bear population management across Europe, including sessions on:

  • Developing bear-smart communities
  • Managing human-large carnivore conflicts
  • Integrating AI in conflict reduction
  • Fostering ecological connectivity
  • Knowledge sharing on bear-smart business plans
  • Field visits showcasing conflict management efforts
  • Tools and technologies in wildlife intervention
  • Wildlife crime detection

Join the conference for insightful discussions, field visits, and knowledge sharing on wildlife conservation in Romania and Europe!
