The Carpathian Convention takes center stage at the Bern III conference
In a pivotal gathering to bolster collaboration among biodiversity-related conventions, the Bern III Conference, held from January 23 to 25, 2024 at the Universal Postal Union in Bern, Switzerland, played a crucial role in advancing the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).
The conference focused on identifying opportunities for increased cooperation through an inclusive and coordinated approach, while respecting the mandates of the different Multilateral Environmental Agreements.
Among the contributions to the conference, was the presentation by the Carpathian Convention Secretariat of the Carpathian Biodiversity Framework as a case study. This tangible example demonstrates the real-world impact and scalability of cooperative efforts in biodiversity conservation.
The Bern III Conference on Cooperation among the Biodiversity-related Conventions for the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal GBF aimed to contribute to the efficient and effective implementation of the Kunming-Montreal GBF by identifying opportunities to drive and coordinate an inclusive collaborative approach towards implementation of the framework while respecting the respective mandates of biodiversity-related conventions and other relevant multilateral agreements and United Nations.
The primary objectives of the conference were to:
- Identify opportunities to strengthen cooperation and collaboration among Parties to the MEAs in implementing the Kunming-Montreal GBF at all appropriate levels.
- Make recommendations on further steps that could be taken in order to strengthen cooperation and collaboration while recognising the respective roles and mandates of all concerned.
- Share practical experiences of cooperation and collaboration in implementing MEAs that could be scaled up in appropriate circumstances.
The conference organizers opened a call for submission of case studies presenting examples of good collaborative practice at the national, regional, and global levels, as well as secretariat-level examples of cooperation in the implementation of biodiversity-related conventions.
The Secretariat submitted the Carpathian Biodiversity Framework as a case study, which was prominently presented at the Bern III Conference (see info about the case study in the attachment).
