Stakeholders’ consultations on establishing the Trans-European Nature Network - REPORT
On October 11, 2023, in Belgrade, Serbia, experts and conservationists convened to address the significance of ecological connectivity in the Carpathian region at the Carpathian Convention COP7 Stakeholders’ Consultation, led by the NaturaConnect project. Emphasizing a ‘holistic perspective’ and ‘multi-dimensional approach,’ NaturaConnect advocated for policy coordination, information sharing, and a broad approach.
Key presentations featured insights from Cristian Remus Papp of WWF-Romania, stressing the threats of habitat fragmentation and the need for holistic conservation. Harald Egerer, Head of the Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention, highlighted the importance of ecological corridors for both nature and economic development, praising NaturaConnect’s role.
Breakout sessions revealed crucial insights aligning with NaturaConnect’s mission, including the need for social acceptance, effective legislation, a multi-dimensional approach, climate change resilience, collaboration, funding, and public participation. NaturaConnect aims to influence the prioritization of new areas for the Trans-European Nature Network in the Carpathians.
Panel discussions showcased NaturaConnect’s broad approach to ecological connectivity. The Carpathian Convention COP7 Stakeholders’ Consultation affirmed NaturaConnect’s pivotal role in shaping the Carpathians’ ecological future, supporting key goals across sectors. The event exemplified collaborative efforts to preserve the region’s biodiversity.
As a NaturaConnect case study, the Danube-Carpathian region will witness comprehensive engagement by WWF-CEE, IIASA, and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, alongside the Convention’s working groups. NaturaConnect is dedicated to preserving the unique ecosystem’s natural beauty and biodiversity, leading the way in this collective endeavor.
